Hulu Plus gets 'Kids Lock' feature on iPad, enhances the experience for little ones

Hulu Plus gets 'Kids Lock' feature on iPad, enhances the experience for little ones

Hulu's Kids Lock has already been implemented on Android, and now it's time for the children-tailored, itty-bitty feature to make its way to iOS -- well, at least to the iPad. It's rather simple, really: Kids Lock essentially comes in the form of a virtual button on the app, allowing parents -- or whoever's in charge -- to easily secure their tiny loved ones into the Hulu Kids experience. Meanwhile, getting back to the TV shows and movies watched by the bosses of the house is rather uncomplicated -- all there's to do is enter the account password and bam, all is golden and everyone can go back to watching Parenthood. Aside from Kids Lock, v2.7 doesn't add too much more, save for a few bugs being fixed and some backend enhancements to make Hulu's iOS application more stable overall.

A Connection is Made: Pearson, RttT, Rhee?and Me ? Middle ...

One of the most important things about teaching middle school students is making sure they can use background knowledge and skills, along with the new knowledge they discover, to find patterns and make logical connections. ?The best part of teaching is watching students reach those ?A-HA? moments and create original thoughts and ideas. ?It?s a practice that everyone should practice every day, everywhere. ?Without evidence and sources, though, it?s just a conspiracy theory. ?So, I will add those in a new ?Resources? page over the next several days.

So here?s one. ?While researching the issues with which I plan to approach educational leadership in the next few weeks, I saw a connection. ?I?m sure there are people out there who research this stuff and make these connections all the time; I need to find their circles of influence and join them to learn more. ?However, in my circles, the arguments, debates, and concerns are disconnected?fiery, but disconnected. ?We know that the charter movement is coming, and we hate Michelle Rhee for making the push so blatantly and so crookedly. ?We know that educators are now being evaluated based on student test scores and we hate that too, but we don?t know who made this rule or why (and our district leadership won?t tell us). ?We know that we have to administer more and more tests to students, which we find intrusive, stressful to all, and a major waste of time and money.

Click for larger image

I?ve created a Venn diagram to try to make the connection I see in my head. ?The trifecta, as one colleague called it, is seemingly nothing more than a well-orchestrated and patient profit machine, with three major operators: testing companies (like Pearson), the federal and state governments, and charter management companies (and their friends, like StudentsFirst).

It?s hard to see it all in order, but I know that large companies like Pearson win contracts from state governments, who are forced by Race to the Top to take part in ?student learning measurements? (a.k.a. standardized tests), and all in the name of privatizing education. ?If Pearson publishes the texts and the tests, and the government is forced to administer them, then ALEC and the charter movement can point to the dismal results and say that teachers and their unions are failing kids.

Teachers, like me, and students pay the price with the kind of curriculum disasters, bad working conditions, and student disenfranchisement we see today. ?Districts are caught in this as well, and are fronting most of the costs.

The plan hasn?t even come full circle yet. ?Many teachers and parents are now asking, ?How much worse can it get??

Do you see that connection too? ?Or am I way off base here? Is there a way to make that Venn reflect the reality a little better?

Use Your "Senior" Discount at the Movie Theaters and Save a Few Dollars with Each Ticket [Discounts]

Use Your "Senior" Discount at the Movie Theaters and Save a Few Dollars with Each TicketMovie theaters offer discounts to seniors, which isn't very helpful to those of us who have yet to reach our golden years. Redditor Drax3 gets around this agist restriction by using an automated ticket kiosk instead of the box office:

Next time you go out to the movie theater, purchase your tickets at the automated ticket purchasing kiosk. When selecting how many tickets you want for the movie, click on the +1 for a Senior Ticket instead of a General Admission Ticket. At the theaters in my area, a Senior Ticket is $10 while General Admission is $14. Saves me $4 every time, and the person who checks the ticket has never noticed/bothered to say anything. Might not seem like a lot of money, but if you frequent the theater as much as I do, it can add up pretty quickly.

Of course, redditor DrowZeeMe used to work at a movie theater and did, indeed, notice this senior scam:

I worked at a movie theatre, ripping tickets, for 2 and a half years. And I LOVED catching people like you. Also under age kids were funny too. Sometimes, I'd let them through, only to stop them 3 steps later, "Hang on, let me see your ticket again"

Basically, your mileage may vary with this tip and you'll have to judge how attentive the employees at your theater are before you give it a try. On the upside, whether you do this online or at a ticket kiosk you can always claim to have pressed the wrong button and pay the difference if you're caught. That way there's no harm done if things go awry. Of course, you can get a better discount by just buying your tickets in bulk, and that requires no risk or ethical concerns at all.

This post is part of our Evil Week series at Lifehacker, where we look at the dark side of getting things done. Knowing evil means knowing how to beat it, so you can use your sinister powers for good. Want more? Check out our evil week tag page.

Could Democrats steal a Senate seat in Arizona?

Former President Bill Clinton is in Arizona Wednesday to campaign for Democratic Senate candidate Richard Carmona, who is staying close to his Republican challenger, Jeff Flake.?

Republican efforts to take back the Senate ? already complicated by the controversial campaign of Todd Akin in Missouri and a tight race in Massachusetts ? could face another challenge in one of the most unexpected of places.?

In Arizona, Democratic candidate Richard Carmona is polling surprisingly well against his Republican challenger, Rep. Jeff Flake. The RealClearPolitics average of polls puts Congressman Flake up by 2.3 percentage points, 44.3 to 42 percent.

On Wednesday, Mr. Carmona's campaign released a poll that suggested Carmona was actually ahead, 47 to 43 percent. Within hours, the Flake campaign countered with its own poll, suggesting Flake was up 49 to 43 percent.

"All you can say at this moment is that it's a race worth watching," says Larry Sabato, a professor of politics at the University of Virginia.

It remains an uphill battle for the Democrats. Arizona hasn't sent a Democrat to the Senate in nearly 18 years and hasn't voted for a Democratic candidate for president since 1996, when it went for Bill Clinton. Wednesday evening, Mr. Clinton will stump for Carmona at a rally in Tempe, Ariz.

Carmona and Flake, a sixth-term congressman known as a fiscal conservative, are vying for the open seat of retiring Republican Sen. Jon Kyl.

Carmona's rise in the polls has come even as Mitt Romney has solidified his lead over President Obama here. A virtual unknown outside of southern Arizona, he has become competitive mostly through a compelling personal narrative. He grew up in Harlem, dropped out of high school, and joined the Army at 17. He later became a decorated Vietnam War veteran, a surgeon general under George W. Bush, a SWAT team member, and a medical doctor.

"His ads have focused on his r?sum?, which is pretty exceptional," says Bruce Merrill, a political scientist and public-opinion researcher in the Phoenix area. "He worked his way up from nothing."

Carmona also is of Puerto Rican descent, something the state Democratic leadership is banking on to attract Hispanic voters. Their national counterparts have devoted more than $1 million to the race, forcing Republicans to spend roughly half that amount to boost Flake's campaign. They have portrayed Carmona as "Barack Obama's rubberstamp."

It could be an effective strategy. "His association with Obama in a state that isn't that favorably exposed to him is not a good thing," says Margaret Kenski, an Arizona pollster in Tucson who works mostly with Republicans.

Obama is not popular among many Arizonans who "don't like Obamacare and feel that he hasn't done enough on border issues," she says.

But Flake's highly divisive primary contest came at a cost and seems to have opened a window for Carmona, who ran unopposed, Ms. Kenski adds.

To win, Carmona would have to win over a majority of independent voters and get a significant number of Hispanic voters to the polls, says Mr. Merrill, the political scientist. About a third of Arizona voters are registered as independent, while about 36 percent of Arizona's voters are Republican, and 30 percent are Democrat. Hispanics make up 30 percent of Arizona's population.

Carmona has targeted independents with his ads. "Republicans and Democrats both got it wrong," ?he says in one spot. "We've got to make health care affordable to small business and working families through innovation and preventive care while also cutting waste and fraud."

But Kenski notes that Carmona has yet to make clear his stance on health care and other issues of concern to Arizonans, which could hurt his chances.

Discipline in parenting: Take charge over your child

Disciplining needs to be done fearlessly ? natural authority is advantageous and parents should build on it when drawing the line with their offspring.

One of the greatest ironies of our time: Today?s women have inherited from their mothers the freedom to claim authority in the military, corporations, churches, the professions, politics, and higher education, but have been persuaded, largely by their own gender, to all but completely abdicate their authority over their children.

Sixty years ago this month, I entered first grade in Charleston, S.C. The class picture shows 50 children. There are no names under the picture save the teacher?s, so I only know that 50 kids showed up the day the photo was taken. I am certain that my first grade teacher had fewer problems out of us during the entire school year than today?s first grade teacher, with half the number of students and an aide, is having during the first week or two of any given school year. Oh, and by the way, most of us early baby boomers came to grade one not knowing our ABCs, yet by the end of that first school year we were outperforming today?s kids (most of whom learn their ABCs at age 3 and have started reading by the time they enter first grade) in every subject. And we continued to do so through college. And our?parents?did not give us regular help with our homework!

The reason we learned so effectively within such ?overcrowded? (and ?underfunded?) conditions is simple: We came to school having already learned that women possess a natural authority. We had already learned that when a woman said, ?This is the way it?s going to be,? that was the way it was going to be. Period. Today?s kids do not come to school with these same understandings, and that, not IQ, is what defines a successful student.

Sixty years ago, the American child was afraid of his mother. Oh, and by the way, all the statistics clearly indicate that child mental health was a whole lot better back then than it is now. Being afraid of one?s mother (while at the same time secure in her unconditional love) is a good thing for both parties, but especially the child.

Being afraid of one?s mother has nothing to do with spanking, by the way. My mother (a single?parent?during most of my early years) never spanked. I don?t even remember her yelling. And yet, I was afraid of her. All she needed to do was look at me a certain way and my spine began tingling.

All too many of today?s mothers are afraid of their children. They are intimidated by their children?s tantrums, disrespect, disobedience, petulance, and so on. I submit that this, not any other ?liberation? issue, is the biggest problem facing women today.

Women once wore their authority over their children like it was the most natural of habits. They no longer do. When they talk to their kids, they squat down and look like they?re petitioning the king for a favor. And they sound like it, too!

?Billy, how about helping Mommy pick up these toys before the real estate agent gets over here, okay? Do you think you can help me with that like a big boy? How about if we do it together, and while we pick them up we can sing the ?I?m Helping Mommy? song!?

And then this same mother complains that her son doesn?t obey her. Fancy that!

It?s high time America?s mothers reclaimed the authority their grandmothers had over their children. They can start by giving instructions in ten words or less, as in ?It?s time for you to pick up these toys, now.? And then, to the inevitable question, saying ?Because I said so, that?s why.?
