North Korea's new leaders lash out at South Korea and allies (Reuters)

SEOUL (Reuters) ? North Korea sounded a bellicose note in its first communication with the outside world since the death of leader Kim Jong-il, saying its confrontational stance against South Korea would not change and labeling its opponents "foolish."

Since Kim Jong-il died on December 17, the outside world has been watching to see whether his son Kim Jong-un, aged in his 20s, would stick to its hardline "military first" policies that have seen the isolated nation move closer to nuclear weapons capacity.

"On this occasion, we solemnly declare with confidence that foolish politicians around the world, including the puppet forces in South Korea, should not expect any changes from us," a broadcaster on state television said on Friday.

She was reading a statement from the National Defense Commission, the top body in the militarized and impoverished state under Kim Jong-il.

In a break from the black mourning clothing worn since Kim Jong-il's death, the broadcaster wore dark red clothes and almost shouted her defiant message.

North Korea has a long history of using bellicose phrases against the South, especially since the conservative government of Lee Myung-bak took office in 2008 and ended a policy of engagement with the North.

It has threatened to turn the South's capital Seoul into a "sea of fire" on numerous occasions and repeated that rhetoric again on Friday.

"We will never engage with the Lee Myung-bak administration," said the announcer.

"The sea of bloody tears from our military and people will follow the puppet regime until the end. The tears will turn into a sea of revengeful fire that burns everything."

In 2010, the North launched an artillery barrage that killed South Korean civilians for the first time since the end of the Korean War in 1953. It was blamed for sinking a South Korean warship earlier that year, although it denies it did.

Little is known of Kim Jong-un, who had been groomed for government since 2009.

He has been dubbed "Supreme Commander" in North Korea and is expected to rule with the aid of key figures like his uncle Jang Song-thaek, at least in the early stages of the power transition.

"Expecting any change from the North on our part would be foolish," said Chung Young-tae, an analyst at the Korea Institute of National Unification in Seoul, a government think-tank.

South Korea's government did not formally respond to the comments from the North.

NUCLEAR CAPACITY

Under Kim Jong-il, who died earlier this month aged 69, North Korea conducted two nuclear tests and a top observer of its nuclear program said this week the country may only be a few years away from developing a nuclear tipped missile.

Few however expect the North to launch a full scale attack on South Korea. Pyongyang's main backer, China, has repeatedly urged a "peaceful" solution on the Korean peninsula.

Despite the freeze in official relations between North and South, the two sides held talks this year which North Korea leaked, embarrassing the government in Seoul.

North Korea needs food aid from the government in Seoul as up to a third of its population is malnourished, according to the United Nations.

"These forms of messages have led to conversation before," said Chung.

Pam Behan, Former Kardashian-Jenner Nanny, Shopping Tell-All Book

Looks like The Help is turning on The Kardashians.

A former family nanny is shopping a tell-all book about her time with the famous family before they were that famous. Spoiler alert: She's not a big fan!

Pam Behan, served as a nanny, personal assistant and cook for Bruce and Kris Jenner for years, getting to know the Kardashian girls and Brody Jenner.

She couldn't stand Brody or his brother Brandon (Bruce's kids from his first marriage), calling the two Jenner boys "extremely spoiled and disrespectful."

As for the K-squad?

Kardashian Family

Pam describes her relationship with Kris Jenner as a "love/hate" thing. We totally get it. Sort of like THG's relationship with her, only without the first part.

Despite selling him out in a book, she seems somewhat fond of Bruce, claiming he helped her avoid prosecution when she was busted for DUI a while back.

Behan promises to reveal some "intimate details" about Kourtney and Kim Kardashian, which is surprising, as the girls were reportedly very fond of her.

Then again, it could be one of those empty promises used to sell books, since no one would by a tell-all about Brody Jenner. Sorry B. Just how it is.

Several agents have indicated interest, but no deal has been struck yet.

Restaurant review: California Pizza Kitchen

Since its first branch opened in Beverly Hills in 1985, California Pizza Kitchen has built its reputation on offbeat, extravagant pizza combinations like the California club pizza (first baked with smoked bacon, chicken and mozzarella and then topped with tomatoes and chilled lettuce tossed in mayonnaise (NT$380), and the pear and Gorgonzola (the two main ingredients come alongside mozzarella, caramelized onions and mixed salad, NT$420). The chain?s first Taiwan store is located in the food court of Vieshow Cinema (????) in Xinyi District. The sit-down restaurant opened earlier this month and has been racking up good business so far. On a recent Wednesday evening, we arrived around 7:30pm but had to wait half an hour for a table.

California Pizza Kitchen is also known for a rotating selection of indulgent appetizers. The current roster at the Taipei location includes calorie bombs like pork rib quesadillas (NT$320) and karaage crispy chicken (NT$210), or Japanese-style fried chicken served with a citrus-soy dipping sauce. There are a few healthier options, such as the Greek plate, or hummus and Greek salad served with pizza bread (NT$250).

We ordered smoked salmon deviled eggs (NT$300), which were served with toasted triangles of pita bread. California Pizza Kitchen?s take on the classic American finger food featured yolk mixed with dill paste and stuffed back into hard-boiled egg white halves, topped with smoked salmon, cucumber, tomato and parsley. It tasted much lighter than traditional deviled eggs, which are usually made with dollops of mayo. Despite the slice of salty smoked salmon layered on top of each egg, however, the dish was somewhat bland and could have done with a heavy sprinkling of paprika.

California Pizza Kitchen

Address: Vieshow Cinemas Taipei Xinyi (????????), 2F, 20 Songshou Rd, Taipei City (??????20?2?)

Telephone: (02) 2722-8383

Open: Daily from 11am to midnight

Average meal: Most pizzas and other entrees range in price from NT$300 to NT$600

Details: Chinese and English menu, credit cards accepted

My companion ordered the Milan pizza (NT$420), which is smothered in three types of cheeses (Edam, mozzarella and Parmesan) and topped with spicy and sweet Italian sausage, sauteed mushrooms, caramelized onion and fresh herbs. The meat was delicious, but we were surprised by the sweetness of the crust. The pizza?s many toppings disguised its flaky, buttery texture until we got to the edge of each slice. Once we noticed it, however, it became distracting.

My serving of California kung pao spaghetti (NT320) was much more successful. Tossed in red chili paste with plenty of garlic, peanuts and crispy scallions, the pasta was very piquant. Toppings of chicken or shrimp are available for an extra charge.

With its pastry-dough-like taste, California Pizza Kitchen?s crust pairs well with sweet toppings ? and, indeed, there are several dessert pizzas available, including the pearl tapioca milk tea pizza (NT$280). Topped with pearl tapioca, large multi-colored mochi (or glutinous rice) balls and lashings of tea-flavored cream, the dessert pizza looked unappetizing but tasted surprisingly good. Strawberry slices added an unexpected pop of tartness and the crispy dough was a good textural complement to all the chewy toppings. The pearl tapioca milk tea pizza is best shared between at least two people. Other sweet options include the red wine apple cinnamon pizza (NT$250) and the banana chocolate and marshmallow pizza (NT$250), which appeared to be a popular choice among other diners.

Khan wows at rally, emerges as force in Pakistan

Professional sportsman-turned-politician Imran Khan has cemented his standing as a force in Pakistan politics, observers said Monday after his rally in Karachi brought at least 100,000 supporters onto the streets.

Khan, 59, is riding a wave of dissatisfaction with the government of President Asif Ali Zardari, who is facing challengers from the military and political opponents over his handling of the country and its troubled alliance with the United States.

In a rousing speech punctuated with patriotic musical refrains, he pledged, if elected, to curb Pakistan's endemic corruption and referred to his surging popularity as a "tsunami."

"He is riding a wave of popular politics right now," said Mutahir Ahmed, a professor of International Relations at the University of Karachi told Reuters. "There is a lot of frustration among ordinary people, as well as political workers right now, which he is cashing on."

Several recent polls have shown Khan is the country?s most popular politician, who entered politics in 1996, four years after he captained the only Pakistani cricket team to clinch the World Cup.

However, popularity has not always translated into influence. In the last 15 years, his Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaaf (PTI), or Pakistan Movement for Justice, has only briefly held one seat in parliament - Khan's own.? Most analysts say Khan could score an upset of 20 to 30 seats in parliament, but that's not enough to give him the premiership. ?It is enough to make him a major political player, however ? or even a kingmaker.

Video: 'Stop fighting and start talking' (on this page)

"It's too premature to get into speculation of whether he becomes prime minister or not but the chances of his party getting into parliament look very good," security analyst Imtiaz Gul told Reuters.

Sunday?s rally, one of the largest held in the city in recent years, comes at a time of crisis in Pakistani politics. Tensions are rising between Pakistan's civilian leaders and its generals over a memo that accused the army of plotting a coup after the U.S. raid that killed Osama bin Laden in May.

There are signs that Pakistan's powerful army is fed up with Zardari, who co-chairs the ruling Pakistan People?s Party (PPP), and wants the supreme court or early elections to force him from office. The army chief dismissed any rumors of a coup, however, as "speculation."

Roads jammed for 10 hours
All roads in the port city of Karachi near the rally venue were jammed for more than ten hours, the news agency AFP reported, with the large turnout indicating Khan may no longer be confined to the political sidelines.

"Not only has Imran's status as a rising star in politics been cemented, his PTI will also be a force to reckon with in the coming days," Pakistan?s biggest English language newspaper, The News International, said in an editorial Monday.

Story: Pakistan: 30,000 Islamists rally against US

"What we are seeing is a trend of growing support for Imran and his party," it added, although it also questioned some of Khan's ambitious promises such a pledge to end all corruption within 90 days.

"We need a government that changes the system and ends corruption, so we need the PTI to come to power," Khan told the crowd. "The first thing we need to do is end corruption."

"It's time for a change and only PTI and Imran Khan can bring about that change," said Sabina Saifi, 28, a school teacher. She was wearing a PTI cap and had come with her two brothers.

Pakistan news website Dawn said: "Emotions ran high among the participants, including old citizens and those arriving at the venue on wheelchairs, eager to see and hear Imran Khan, who is now recognized as a force to be reckoned with after his successful shows of political prowess in different parts of the country."

Relations between Pakistan and the the United States have reached a crisis point because of a Nov 26 cross-border incident in which NATO aircraft killed 24 Pakistani troops. Pakistan has since shut down NATO supply routes into Afghanistan and demanded an apology.

Khan says that, if elected prime minister, he would end cooperation in the fight against militants based in tribal areas, end the covert campaign of bombings by U.S. drones and refuse all U.S. aid, which totals some $20 billion since 2001.

However, the U.S. ambassador to Pakistan, Cameron Munter, however, said in November that he didn't see Khan as anti-American.

Story: CIA, US Marines start to leave Pakistan drone base

"Imran Khan is, as far as he tells me, for the same kind of values that we think are important," Munter said on a popular talk show on November 22. "He says he's for democracy, he's for governance that's clean, he's for economic growth. We're all for those things."

Justin Bieber Plays Generous Santa to Childhood BFF

We already know that Justin Bieber is an incredible boyfriend.

Turns out, he's a pretty awesome best friend, too.

Consider what Justin gave childhood BFF Ryan Butler: a Mustang convertible! The pal, who had a cameo in the video for "One Time," Tweeted a photo of the gift Monday night, along with the message: "Justin got me a present. #swag!!!"

Mustang Photo

As for Bieber? He's been chilling at home in Canada, as the superstar chimed in via Twitter on Christmas Eve: "spending time with family - feels really good."

He also presented fans with these two videos on Christmas Day. Granted, we'd rather have had a new car, but still.

Niners Nation :: Sunday Night Football Open Thread: Packers Vs. Bears

I hope everyone had a great Christmas. The NFL moved most of their football to Saturday, but they did leave a little something for us on Sunday evening. The Green Bay Packers host the Chicago Bears on Sunday Night Football in what should be a fun rivalry game.

The Bears actually still have something to play for this season. If they win out and Atlanta loses out, the Bears would claim the remaining wild card berth. On the other hand, the Green Bay Packers have plenty of reason to win as they look to lock up the number one seed in the NFC. If they lose to Chicago and then next week to Detroit and the 49ers defeat the Rams next week, San Francisco claims the number one seed.

The odds are long for that to happen, but that doesn't mean we will root for the Bears any less. The Packers are turning into a banged-up squad, so maybe they are ripe for two more upsets. I'm not holding my breath, but maybe we'll get some nice Christmas fortune.

Windows 8 Picture Password is 'Fisher-Price Toy'

@ 2011/12/26 It would seem that not everyone is impressed with the picture password feature in Windows 8. The inventor of RSA's SecurID token actually said the new feature is like a "Fisher-Price toy." It would be funny to see Microsoft challenge him to defeat it. "I don't think it's serious security." All in all, "It's more like a Fisher-Price toy than a serious choice for secure computer access," he says. Still, it's better than nothing, he says, and it is raising awareness of login security.

President Marzouki receives Mayor of Paris

261211-Prsident_FranceCARTHAGE (TAP) - President Moncef Marzouki received, on Monday at Carthage Palace, Mayor of Paris Bertrand Delano? who said in substance about the President "I have known him for a long time since he was chased by the former Tunisian regime."

"I have followed this man's courageous struggle for freedom and human rights and especially for democracy in Tunisia and I am pleased today to meet him as the President of the Republic, after a democratic process that was exemplary and inspired admiration throughout the world," he added Mr. Delano? voiced consideration to Tunisia for the elections of October 23 that had been "extremely successful," expressing wish that the Tunisian people will continue this democratic progress, in the respect of Human rights, women's rights and pluralism.

261211-Prsident_France2The Mayor of Paris said that he had discussed with the President of the Republic the role of the civil society's forces in Tunisia, expressing confidence that the head of State will be the first to support them in his new position.

He, in conclusion, said that "Mr. Moncef Marzouki is a major player in this historical change witnessed by Tunisia," and that "the Tunisian people will be proud of what he will do."

China film stirs passions anew before Japan PM visit (Reuters)

BEIJING (Reuters) ? When Japan's Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda arrives in China Sunday, a new blockbuster movie will ensure that the foremost image of the Japanese in many Chinese people's minds will once again be of the country's brutal wartime misdeeds.

The story of the 1937 Nanjing Massacre, around which Zhang Yimou's "The Flowers of War" is set, is taught from a young age in China, and countless television serials, documentaries and books ensure the topic is never out of the public eye for long.

Since going on wide release last week, the film, which stars Hollywood actor Christian Bale, has played to sell-out audiences who weep openly during its more disturbing scenes, and has taken 200 million yuan ($31.6 million) at the box office to date.

The film has won top-level political support. Its opening night was held in a government building and it is China's Oscar entry for best foreign language film, though it has received rather tepid reviews in the United States.

And director Zhang, who once made edgy films that challenged conventions, has since gone mainstream. He is now firmly viewed as a national hero after orchestrating the dazzling opening ceremony of the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

"The Flowers of War," with its dark hints of necrophilia and male rape and scenes of graphic violence, resembles in parts Chinese government-made anti-Japanese propaganda films, and it is certainly having that effect on many in the audience.

"What horrible people the Japanese are," said student Zhao Lan, after going to a packed showing at a Beijing cinema. "How can they be that crazy and mad!"

"The Japanese soldiers are terrible, and I cannot understand why they still do not want to apologize for their wrongdoings," added a man who gave his surname as Sun.

China says invading Japanese troops slaughtered 300,000 men, women and children in Nanjing, then known as Nanking. An Allied tribunal after World War Two put the death toll at about 142,000.

The film has also triggered a surge of anti-Japanese comments on China's popular Twitter-like microblogs.

"After watching that film, my hatred of Japan has suddenly deepened!" wrote "Ruruzh" on Sina's Weibo.

"We should take action now and boycott all Japanese products!" added "De Meigao."

Some web users suggested Noda see the film when he is in China on his two-day visit, his first since taking office in September.

"I suggest Premier Wen invite Noda to watch the film, and take history as a mirror," wrote "Chen YumoOOOOOO" on portal sina.com.

Both Zhang and Bale have said they did not intend to make a film to whip up anti-Japanese sentiment or hatred.

"I do not think people will be so narrow-minded as to hate someone just after watching a film," Zhang told Reuters this month. "Today's world is somewhere people all wish for peace, and want to live happily with others. Art is only art."

Bale, who landed himself in the government's bad books by trying to visit a detained rights lawyer before leaving China, said that if the film ended up promoting hate, "that would be the worst outcome for me."

"Any war movie that intended that, clearly should not be made. Any movie concerning war should have its aim to be the opposite of that -- it should be reconciliation, it should be understanding," he told Reuters.

Sino-Japanese ties have been shadowed for years by what Beijing says has been Tokyo's refusal to admit to atrocities committed by Japanese soldiers in the country between 1931 and 1945.

Some Japanese historians say the Nanjing Massacre has been exaggerated and some conservatives deny there was even a massacre at all, prompting howls of complaints from China.

Kim Jong Il: Greatest. Filmmaker. Ever.

His role in leading the North Korean people to a perfect Worker's Paradise is well known (aside from a few unfortunate famines). But as film director, Kim Jong Il deserves a retrospective.

To his fans, Kim Jong Il was not merely the Dear Leader, the general secretary of the Workers' Party of Korea, chairman of the National Defence Commission of the DPRK and supreme commander of the Korean People's Army, not to mention the ?father of the nation and lodestar of national reunification.? He was also the Greatest. Filmmaker. Ever.

Sure, the American capitalists have Martin Scorsese, Francis Ford Coppola, and the Farrelly Brothers. But what American director can say he produced a ?revolutionary film? of ?high ideological and artistic value, which makes an effective contribution to arming people fully with the Party's monolithic ideology and which imbues the whole of society with the great Juche idea."

(A note to aspiring revolutionary filmmakers in Hollywood: The Juche idea is defined as the ?philosophical principle that man is the master of everything and decides everything.? Think of the heroic self-determination of Molly Ringwold in her ?16 Candles? phase, meets the glorious masculinity of Tom Cruise in his ?Top Gun? phase, meets Mao Zedong in his ?Speech At The Ninth Plenum Of The Eighth CPC Central Committee? phase.)

Aficionados of Kim Jong-il?s filmmaking genius ? and they are estimated to be 24,346,229 people, exactly the population of North Korea ? will tell you that the most shining example of Kim Jong-il?s Juche Idea was put to film in 1985 with the classic monster film "Pulgasari."

Called one of the most, well, Kim-Jong-ilian movies of the century, Pulgasari is an allegory of the common man?s fight against tyranny, as hapless medieval Korean peasants team up with a giant iron-eating bull to overthrow an evil king. The fact that the young director Kim had to kidnap a South Korean director, Shin Sang-Ok, and his actress wife, Choe Un-Hee, and hold them captive for eight years in order to produce the film can only be said to add to its visual and rhetorical power.

American film critics Rusty Ward and Kevin Maher, hosts of ?So Bad It?s Good? on youtube.com, gave the film a reasonably positive review.?

When Kim Jong Il?s death was announced, there were many Western headlines ? notably this one from the Guardian?s Luke Harding ? attempting to distract the world?s attention to Kim?s genius by warning of Pyongyang?s uncertain control over its nuclear arsenal.

The North Korean government assured the world, however, that while Kim?s death was ?greatest loss to the WPK and the Korean revolution and the bitterest grief to all the Koreans at home and abroad,? the North Korean ship of state was in the capable hands of Kim?s son, Kim Jong-un. ?No force on earth can check the revolutionary advance of our party, army, and people under the wise leadership of Kim Jong Un,? the Associated Press quoted the government saying on Monday.

Kim Jong-il ? he whose birth was announced by a new star, a double rainbow, a talking iceberg; he who attempted to breed giant rabbits to eliminate hunger; he who had disabled people removed from Pyongyang during a youth festival ? would have easily understood how to operate in Hollywood, a town with supersized egos and brutal politics. And he was a man that, with a better agent and perhaps a better editor, could have become one of the great B-movie producers of all time.

But Kim Jong Il?s purpose, clearly, was much larger than mere film. ?

As president, he will be replaced. But his director?s shoes will not be easily filled.

All Nippon Airways said Wednesday in Tokyo that it will begin nonstop service to the West Coast next year, from Narita airport to Seattle. ANA also will serve San Jose, Calif.

The airline says the destinations maximize the ability of the fuel-efficient, mid-size widebody to fly long-range routes.

It will be the first U.S. service for the new plane that Boeing delivered to the launch customer in September, nearly three years late.

ANA says it's enhancing the competitiveness of joint ventures with United and Continental Airlines, two Star Alliance partners.

Keystone XL pipeline: a jobs coup for Republicans in tax deal?

A congressional deal to preserve a payroll tax cut, approved by the Senate Saturday, contains a provision designed to force President Obama's hand on the controversial Keystone XL oil pipeline.

A congressional deal to preserve a payroll tax cut for working Americans, approved by the US Senate Saturday, also contains a provision designed to force President Obama's hand on the controversial Keystone XL oil pipeline.

Republicans who pushed for the provision say the pipeline would be a slam-dunk win for a US economy that desperately needs jobs.

It now appears that when a bill lands on Mr. Obama's desk, with tax cuts that the president endorses as his own way to boost the economy, it will also include a call for him to decide within 60 days whether the Keystone pipeline for Canadian oil should be built.

Senate Republicans insisted the pipeline provision be included in the tax bill. The measure still needs a vote of approval in the Republican-controlled House of Representatives.

The pipeline, which would create jobs but angers environmentalists, has become a political flashpoint in recent months.?

The Monitor's Weekly news Quiz 12/11-12/16

In November, Obama announced his intent to delay a decision until after the 2012 election, thus averting a difficult political dilemma.?

Approving the plans of the Canadian firm TransCanada would have run afoul of environmentalists worried about threats to the massive Ogallala aquifer, which the pipeline would run past. Even Republicans in Nebraska have voiced opposition to the planned path of the project for that reason.?

But denying support would have opened Obama to new jabs from critics who say he's not doing enough about the nation's most urgent priority, job creation. Even his delay, however, prompted that reaction.

Where Obama framed his choice as taking time "to ensure that all questions are properly addressed and all the potential impacts are properly understood,? Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich called any reluctance about the project "utterly irrational."

Rep. Michele Bachmann of Minnesota, another candidate at the Republican debate in Iowa on Thursday, accused the president of making a decision for reasons of politics rather than national interest.?

"This pipeline is one that would have brought at least 20,000 jobs, at least $6.5 billion worth of economic activity," she said. "His entire calculus was based upon his reelection effort. Because quite frankly, the radical environmentalists said to President Obama, you pass Keystone, we're not going to do your volunteer door-to-door work."

Former House Speaker Gingrich said a delay could mean that jobs and economic activity permanently flow elsewhere.

"The Canadian prime minister has already said to the American president, if you don't want to build this pipeline to bring???create 20,000 American jobs and bring oil through the United States to the largest refinery complex in the world, Houston, I want to put it straight west in Canada to Vancouver and ship the oil direct to China," Gingrich said at the debate. "You'll lose the jobs, you'll lose the throughput, you'll lose 30 or 40 years of work in Houston."

Physicists Find 'Hints' of Elusive Higgs Boson

Two teams of scientists at CERN say they may have glimpsed the long-sought Higgs boson while studying particle collisions. Physicist Joe Incandela discusses how the teams are closing in on data that may prove the theoretical particle, considered a building block for the universe, exists.

Attacks kill 7 Shiite pilgrims south of Baghdad (AP)

BAGHDAD ? Two attacks targeting Shiite pilgrims south of Baghdad killed seven people and wounded 33 others on Monday during an important religious ritual for the Muslim sect, Iraqi officials said.

In the first attack, a bomb exploded among Shiite pilgrims in Latifiyah, about 20 miles (30 kilometers) south of the Iraqi capital, killing two of them and wounding three others, police said. A medical official confirmed the casualty toll.

Hours later, a car bomb exploded near a group of Shiite pilgrims in the town of Mahaweel as they were heading to the holy Shiite city of Karbala, killing five people and wounding about 30 other pilgrims, said police officials in Babil province.

Mahaweel is about 35 miles (56 kilometers) south of Baghdad

All officials spoke on condition of anonymity because the are not authorized to talk to the media.

The ritual, known as Ashoura, marks the anniversary of the seventh-century death of Imam Hussein, a grandson of the Prophet Muhammad. His death in a battle outside of Karbala sealed Islam's historical Sunni-Shiite split. To commemorate his death, hundreds of thousands of Shiites walk from around the country to Karbala.

Security is usually very tight in and around the city, so insurgents have taken to attacking the pilgrims during their long walk to and from Karbala when its much harder for the Iraqi security forces to protect them.

The pilgrims are often targeted by Sunni extremists who claim that Shiites are not true Muslims.

Repurposing Anti-Spam Tools For Detecting Mutations In HIV

What's sad is, people still think like that. It's a shame that few people know where AIDS came from. Short version, it's a result of overpopulation. AIDS has always existed, but when population density was lower, it wasn't transmitted between humans. Go ahead, look it up. See where AIDS actually came from. It most definitely was not divine intervention, in retribution for homosexuality. If that were so, it would have killed off all the queers, and left everyone else alone, right?

China eyes European assets -minister (Reuters)

BEIJING (Reuters) ? China's Commerce Minister plans to lead an investment delegation to Europe next year, in hopes that the crisis roiling the continent will open up some plum assets for acquisition.

China has been reluctant to publically commit to buying additional European bonds, despite European pleas for help in shoring up finances there, but could be much more interested in getting hard assets for its cash.

"Next year, we will continue to send a delegation for promoting trade and investment to the European countries," Chen Deming told a gathering of Chinese firms with overseas investments on Monday.

"Some European countries are facing a debt crisis and hope to convert their assets to cash and would like foreign capital to acquire their enterprises. We will be closely watching and pushing forward the progress."

His comments are in keeping with an editorial in the Financial Times this weekend by Lou Jiwei, the head of China Investment Corp (CIC), who wrote that China was keen to make equity investments in Western infrastructure, especially in Britain.

Chen warned that China may fight back if other countries use trade protectionism against it.

Chinese officials repeatedly emphasize the overseas deals that have fallen through because of political opposition; although far more Chinese purchases have cleared with few problems.

China's largest state-owned shipping firm COSCO (1919.HK) has already made a major investment into Greece's historic Piraeus port (OLPr.AT), as part of Greek divestment plans.

Broadly speaking, overseas investment by Chinese state-owned enterprises has so far been primarily geared toward resources purchases, while CIC has been criticised at home for taking equity stakes in Western financial institutions.

CIC was particularly interested in infrastructure projects where governments could offer lower taxes or discounted bank loans in return for investment, Lou wrote in the Financial Times.

China has been colder to pitches to buy more European nations' bonds without getting anything in return. A Spanish delegation was met with polite disinterest from Chinese officials earlier this month, sources said.

The visiting Spanish minister also tried to interest CIC in upcoming divestments of state holdings in savings banks known as cajas, in the national lottery company, airports and other infrastructure.

Commerce Minister Chen cautioned reporters that China itself faces risks of further economic slowdown in 2012.

Annual inflation in 2011 is likely to exceed 5.5 percent -- overshooting the government target of 4 percent -- and inflationary pressures will continue next year, Chen said.

Elan to create research centre with Cambridge University (Reuters)

DUBLIN (Reuters) ? Elan Corp Plc has signed an agreement with Britain's Cambridge University to create a research center focused on therapies for Alzheimer's and Parkinson's, the Dublin-headquartered biotech group said on Sunday.

Elan, whose main research facility is in San Francisco, will spend $10 million over the next five years on the research center and has an option to extend the deal for another five years.

Researchers from Cambridge and Elan want to discover ways of altering the behavior of proteins that can spread neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's.

"This agreement is a natural next step in the existing working relationship between our scientists in South San Francisco and scientists at the University of Cambridge," Dale Schenk, chief scientific officer at Elan, said in a statement.

"This collaborative effort complements our portfolio of programmes in neuroscience and supports the process of discovery which we believe may lead to a class of therapeutics that no one has thought possible before."
