A Connection is Made: Pearson, RttT, Rhee?and Me ? Middle ...

One of the most important things about teaching middle school students is making sure they can use background knowledge and skills, along with the new knowledge they discover, to find patterns and make logical connections. ?The best part of teaching is watching students reach those ?A-HA? moments and create original thoughts and ideas. ?It?s a practice that everyone should practice every day, everywhere. ?Without evidence and sources, though, it?s just a conspiracy theory. ?So, I will add those in a new ?Resources? page over the next several days.

So here?s one. ?While researching the issues with which I plan to approach educational leadership in the next few weeks, I saw a connection. ?I?m sure there are people out there who research this stuff and make these connections all the time; I need to find their circles of influence and join them to learn more. ?However, in my circles, the arguments, debates, and concerns are disconnected?fiery, but disconnected. ?We know that the charter movement is coming, and we hate Michelle Rhee for making the push so blatantly and so crookedly. ?We know that educators are now being evaluated based on student test scores and we hate that too, but we don?t know who made this rule or why (and our district leadership won?t tell us). ?We know that we have to administer more and more tests to students, which we find intrusive, stressful to all, and a major waste of time and money.

Click for larger image

I?ve created a Venn diagram to try to make the connection I see in my head. ?The trifecta, as one colleague called it, is seemingly nothing more than a well-orchestrated and patient profit machine, with three major operators: testing companies (like Pearson), the federal and state governments, and charter management companies (and their friends, like StudentsFirst).

It?s hard to see it all in order, but I know that large companies like Pearson win contracts from state governments, who are forced by Race to the Top to take part in ?student learning measurements? (a.k.a. standardized tests), and all in the name of privatizing education. ?If Pearson publishes the texts and the tests, and the government is forced to administer them, then ALEC and the charter movement can point to the dismal results and say that teachers and their unions are failing kids.

Teachers, like me, and students pay the price with the kind of curriculum disasters, bad working conditions, and student disenfranchisement we see today. ?Districts are caught in this as well, and are fronting most of the costs.

The plan hasn?t even come full circle yet. ?Many teachers and parents are now asking, ?How much worse can it get??

Do you see that connection too? ?Or am I way off base here? Is there a way to make that Venn reflect the reality a little better?

Use Your "Senior" Discount at the Movie Theaters and Save a Few Dollars with Each Ticket [Discounts]

Use Your "Senior" Discount at the Movie Theaters and Save a Few Dollars with Each TicketMovie theaters offer discounts to seniors, which isn't very helpful to those of us who have yet to reach our golden years. Redditor Drax3 gets around this agist restriction by using an automated ticket kiosk instead of the box office:

Next time you go out to the movie theater, purchase your tickets at the automated ticket purchasing kiosk. When selecting how many tickets you want for the movie, click on the +1 for a Senior Ticket instead of a General Admission Ticket. At the theaters in my area, a Senior Ticket is $10 while General Admission is $14. Saves me $4 every time, and the person who checks the ticket has never noticed/bothered to say anything. Might not seem like a lot of money, but if you frequent the theater as much as I do, it can add up pretty quickly.

Of course, redditor DrowZeeMe used to work at a movie theater and did, indeed, notice this senior scam:

I worked at a movie theatre, ripping tickets, for 2 and a half years. And I LOVED catching people like you. Also under age kids were funny too. Sometimes, I'd let them through, only to stop them 3 steps later, "Hang on, let me see your ticket again"

Basically, your mileage may vary with this tip and you'll have to judge how attentive the employees at your theater are before you give it a try. On the upside, whether you do this online or at a ticket kiosk you can always claim to have pressed the wrong button and pay the difference if you're caught. That way there's no harm done if things go awry. Of course, you can get a better discount by just buying your tickets in bulk, and that requires no risk or ethical concerns at all.

This post is part of our Evil Week series at Lifehacker, where we look at the dark side of getting things done. Knowing evil means knowing how to beat it, so you can use your sinister powers for good. Want more? Check out our evil week tag page.

Could Democrats steal a Senate seat in Arizona?

Former President Bill Clinton is in Arizona Wednesday to campaign for Democratic Senate candidate Richard Carmona, who is staying close to his Republican challenger, Jeff Flake.?

In Arizona, Democratic candidate Richard Carmona is polling surprisingly well against his Republican challenger, Rep. Jeff Flake. The RealClearPolitics average of polls puts Congressman Flake up by 2.3 percentage points, 44.3 to 42 percent.

On Wednesday, Mr. Carmona's campaign released a poll that suggested Carmona was actually ahead, 47 to 43 percent. Within hours, the Flake campaign countered with its own poll, suggesting Flake was up 49 to 43 percent.

"All you can say at this moment is that it's a race worth watching," says Larry Sabato, a professor of politics at the University of Virginia.

It remains an uphill battle for the Democrats. Arizona hasn't sent a Democrat to the Senate in nearly 18 years and hasn't voted for a Democratic candidate for president since 1996, when it went for Bill Clinton. Wednesday evening, Mr. Clinton will stump for Carmona at a rally in Tempe, Ariz.

Carmona and Flake, a sixth-term congressman known as a fiscal conservative, are vying for the open seat of retiring Republican Sen. Jon Kyl.

Carmona's rise in the polls has come even as Mitt Romney has solidified his lead over President Obama here. A virtual unknown outside of southern Arizona, he has become competitive mostly through a compelling personal narrative. He grew up in Harlem, dropped out of high school, and joined the Army at 17. He later became a decorated Vietnam War veteran, a surgeon general under George W. Bush, a SWAT team member, and a medical doctor.

"His ads have focused on his r?sum?, which is pretty exceptional," says Bruce Merrill, a political scientist and public-opinion researcher in the Phoenix area. "He worked his way up from nothing."

Carmona also is of Puerto Rican descent, something the state Democratic leadership is banking on to attract Hispanic voters. Their national counterparts have devoted more than $1 million to the race, forcing Republicans to spend roughly half that amount to boost Flake's campaign. They have portrayed Carmona as "Barack Obama's rubberstamp."

It could be an effective strategy. "His association with Obama in a state that isn't that favorably exposed to him is not a good thing," says Margaret Kenski, an Arizona pollster in Tucson who works mostly with Republicans.

Obama is not popular among many Arizonans who "don't like Obamacare and feel that he hasn't done enough on border issues," she says.

But Flake's highly divisive primary contest came at a cost and seems to have opened a window for Carmona, who ran unopposed, Ms. Kenski adds.

To win, Carmona would have to win over a majority of independent voters and get a significant number of Hispanic voters to the polls, says Mr. Merrill, the political scientist. About a third of Arizona voters are registered as independent, while about 36 percent of Arizona's voters are Republican, and 30 percent are Democrat. Hispanics make up 30 percent of Arizona's population.

Carmona has targeted independents with his ads. "Republicans and Democrats both got it wrong," ?he says in one spot. "We've got to make health care affordable to small business and working families through innovation and preventive care while also cutting waste and fraud."

But Kenski notes that Carmona has yet to make clear his stance on health care and other issues of concern to Arizonans, which could hurt his chances.

Discipline in parenting: Take charge over your child

Disciplining needs to be done fearlessly ? natural authority is advantageous and parents should build on it when drawing the line with their offspring.

One of the greatest ironies of our time: Today?s women have inherited from their mothers the freedom to claim authority in the military, corporations, churches, the professions, politics, and higher education, but have been persuaded, largely by their own gender, to all but completely abdicate their authority over their children.

Sixty years ago this month, I entered first grade in Charleston, S.C. The class picture shows 50 children. There are no names under the picture save the teacher?s, so I only know that 50 kids showed up the day the photo was taken. I am certain that my first grade teacher had fewer problems out of us during the entire school year than today?s first grade teacher, with half the number of students and an aide, is having during the first week or two of any given school year. Oh, and by the way, most of us early baby boomers came to grade one not knowing our ABCs, yet by the end of that first school year we were outperforming today?s kids (most of whom learn their ABCs at age 3 and have started reading by the time they enter first grade) in every subject. And we continued to do so through college. And our?parents?did not give us regular help with our homework!

The reason we learned so effectively within such ?overcrowded? (and ?underfunded?) conditions is simple: We came to school having already learned that women possess a natural authority. We had already learned that when a woman said, ?This is the way it?s going to be,? that was the way it was going to be. Period. Today?s kids do not come to school with these same understandings, and that, not IQ, is what defines a successful student.

Sixty years ago, the American child was afraid of his mother. Oh, and by the way, all the statistics clearly indicate that child mental health was a whole lot better back then than it is now. Being afraid of one?s mother (while at the same time secure in her unconditional love) is a good thing for both parties, but especially the child.

Being afraid of one?s mother has nothing to do with spanking, by the way. My mother (a single?parent?during most of my early years) never spanked. I don?t even remember her yelling. And yet, I was afraid of her. All she needed to do was look at me a certain way and my spine began tingling.

All too many of today?s mothers are afraid of their children. They are intimidated by their children?s tantrums, disrespect, disobedience, petulance, and so on. I submit that this, not any other ?liberation? issue, is the biggest problem facing women today.

Women once wore their authority over their children like it was the most natural of habits. They no longer do. When they talk to their kids, they squat down and look like they?re petitioning the king for a favor. And they sound like it, too!

?Billy, how about helping Mommy pick up these toys before the real estate agent gets over here, okay? Do you think you can help me with that like a big boy? How about if we do it together, and while we pick them up we can sing the ?I?m Helping Mommy? song!?

And then this same mother complains that her son doesn?t obey her. Fancy that!

It?s high time America?s mothers reclaimed the authority their grandmothers had over their children. They can start by giving instructions in ten words or less, as in ?It?s time for you to pick up these toys, now.? And then, to the inevitable question, saying ?Because I said so, that?s why.?

Ramona SkillsUSA student earns third in nation - Ramona Sentinel ...

By Pixie Sulser

Third in the nation is an honor that Ramona High School senior Tyler Pavlick can add to his already extensive resume.

Pavlick, who grew up riding and working on motorcycles, earned third place win at the SkillsUSA Championship in Kansas City, Mo. The annual competition, which takes place in a space equal to 16 football fields and hosts approximately 5,000 contestants in 95 separate events, showcases the best career and technical students in the nation.

Tyler Pavlick, center, is one of three SkillsUSA students who, with Ramona High School teacher Robert Grace, attended a recent school board meeting to review Ramona High SkillsUSA accomplishments. With Tyler are Lauren Teets, a state SkillsUSA officer last year, and Andrew Hankins. Sentinel photo/Maureen Robertson

Pavlick earned his individual recognition in Motorcycle Service Technology after a 10-hour contest.

?Each competitor had to build a motorcycle motor from the bottom up,? he said. ?We had two hours to complete the motor, but I finished in 45 minutes. I felt pretty confident because I had studied the manual they gave us the night before.?

The one thing he said he did that no one else did was wipe all the fingerprints off the chrome motor when he finished.

?When one of the judges asked me why I had done that, I said, ?Doesn?t your company (Harley) believe that your workers should have good workmanship???

The judge told Palvick that his extra attentiveness had just earned him another 10 points.

?I think that was the difference between third and fourth,? said Palvick.

In addition to bringing home a national title, Palvick earned tools, scholarship money, a Harley jacket, and a Harley motor for the school. All total, from Palvick?s competitions over the past two years, he has earned approximately $70,000 in scholarship monies to technical schools such as Universal Technical Institute (UTI) and Wyotech.

RHS auto teacher Mike Saavedra describes Tyler as ?a student who advanced in automotive due to his willingness to apply himself beyond what most students are willing to do. He always strives to be the best.?

Because of hiw background riding and working on motorcycles, participating in auto classes when he became a freshman at RHS was a natural progression. When he isn?t working on motors at school, he can be found fixing motorcycles at KTM in Ramona or in his own garage after hours working on projects for family and friends.

?I work six days a week at KTM, and then spend several hours a night working on my personal stuff,? said Palvick.

After graduation in June, this enterprising senior plans to take advantage of his scholarships, although his specific plans are still in the planning stages. His ultimate goal is to work in a specialty field such as being a drill rig mechanic or a train mechanic.

International Cricket Council to investigate umpire corruption claims ...

International Cricket Council to investigate umpire corruption claims ? Cricket News Update

Taking immediate notice of allegations of cricket umpire?s involvement in corruption, the International Cricket Council (ICC) has decided to launch a full investigation regarding the matter.

A statement released by the ICC said, ?The ICC and its relevant members have been made aware of the allegations made by India TV and calls on the station to turn over any information which can assist the ICC's urgent investigations. The ICC re-iterates its zero-tolerance towards corruption whether alleged against players or officials.?

?The ICC confirms that none of the umpires named were involved in any of the official games of the ICC World Twenty20 in Sri Lanka. The ICC will not make any further comment on this issue," the statement added.

A sting operation was carried out by India?s India TV targeting cricket umpires . According to the television network, its reporters disguised themselves as representatives of a sports management company. They carried out the expos? via contacting the umpires through Skype.

According to the revelations made public by the network, four umpires agreed to favour certain players by giving decision of leg before wicket and run-outs.

Among the umpires who have been named in this sting operation, one is a member of the ICC's international panel of umpires, and two have officiated in international fixtures. Meanwhile, two were fourth officials in unofficial warm-up matches before the World Twenty20 in Sri Lanka.

It has been alleged that one of the umpires was paid Rs 15,000 (US$285) for providing pre-match information of a domestic Twenty20 match that included the state of the pitch and the playing XIs. This umpire can be seen on Skype promising the same level of cooperation for a World Twenty20 practice game.

Since two of the umpires are from Bangladesh, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has pledged a detailed inquiry into the matter.

In May this year, India TV had made allegations of corrupt practices by five Indian domestic players; the individuals were later banned by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) for varying lengths.

If these allegations are found correct by the ICC, it could have serious impact on the future of these umpires.

Tomato, Pancetta, Onion ? Light and Fresh Pasta al la Jamie | Crazy ...

So when I did this recipe, I totally just made it up . It was on a Sunday night and I wasn?t really in the mood to cook. But I didn?t and never want to eat out. So I just made this up as I went?along with?the help of Normy chopping and cooking with me?

So I bought some Pancetta at the store earlier that day and was going to use it for another recipe but decided I will use it for this recipe instead.

So you will need the following for this recipe:

Olive Oil
Pancetta ? about 6 slices
1 Red onion, chopped
2 garlic cloves, minced
4 tomatoes, washed and chopped (2?regular tomatoes & 2 heirloom)
Salt & Pepper to taste
Red pepper flakes, to taste
spaghetti pasta noodles
Freshly grated parmesan cheese
fresh basil leaves 5-7, chopped

DSC_0446-1

So six slices of pancetta (you can add more or less) stack the slices on top of each other and then slice like so:

DSC_0443-1

DSC_0445-1

Then chop the strips into chunks like so (good job Normy)

DSC_0448-1

Place in a bowl and set aside

DSC_0452-1

then get a red onion and chop that up as well (I like small to medium dice)
DSC_0455-1

DSC_0457-1

DSC_0458-1

DSC_0459-1

So Normy and I went to the Farmer?s Market the day before when I made this dish, and I hadn?t decided what I wanted to make with the tomatoes I had gotten. I LOVE TOMATOES! Especially if they home grown?or farmers market tomatoes. To me they taste SO much better that the grocery store tomatoes. So I got some regular tomatoes and then I got 2 Heirloom tomatoes (My favorite)

So I used two of the regular tomatoes and two of the heirloom tomatoes for this dish, wash them and then chop them up

DSC_0461-1

DSC_0463-1

set them aside.
DSC_0466-1

Then get a medium/large Skillet. I used my cast-iron skillet cause well I LOVES it.

Coat the bottom of the pan with Olive oil and turnto medium High heat. Then add the chopped onions
DSC_0465-1

Cook onions until they are translucent about 8-10 minutes

then add the pancetta to the onions
DSC_0467-1

DSC_0469-1

cook pancetta for about 5-7 minutes

Then add in 2 minced garlic cloves
DSC_0471-1

cook garlic for a minute or two and then add in the chopped tomatoes

DSC_0473-1

DSC_0475-1

add salt and pepper to taste and a little bit of red pepper flakes for a little kick.
DSC_0476-1

stir tomatoes and cook for 2-3 minutes just to basically warm the tomatoes through and then turn the heat off.
DSC_0479-1

So while I was cooking the tomatoes Normy cooked the pasta. We did spaghetti?noodles and then he also?grated some fresh parmesan and chopped some fresh basil leaves

So place some cooked pasta in a bowl and then top with the onion, pancetta, and tomatoes and then top with fresh basil and the fresh grated parmesan cheese
DSC_0480-1

and you have you some light and fresh pasta

The Need For Higher Education

Receiving an undergraduate degree in business is the first step in the process. Undergraduate degrees allow many individuals to enter their field of choice with relatively stable jobs and at times, allow them to advance to higher positions after gaining experience. However, in some cases, an individual may not advance in a business because of the lack of higher education.

To reach higher positions, businesses are looking for individuals who are well experienced and educated. So, what should you do? Well, it depends on what you want to do in a business and it depends on the business. For some, experience is all you need to climb the business ladder. For other businesses, education is needed. If you need higher education, then you should consider getting an MBA or MBM, depending on your field. Receiving higher education of this type will distinguish you from other individuals, increase your ability to attain higher positions and wages.

Since higher education is in high demand, you may wonder why it's so important for the job. Here are few reasons why higher education is needed for business:

-Concepts discussed and learned in school may not be covered in on-the-job experience. It's best to learn the concepts and then match them with experience. This will increase your potential to make the best decisions at the right time in a field.

-Education also provides training for certain circumstances. Learn how to react in different situations before you get into a field and make major decisions that affect the entire business. Make mistakes without huge consequences and learn from those mistakes for future reference.

-Learn more about your specific field and how you can improve strategies and business models. Education can enable you to think of new ideas that are worth sharing with a business.

-Expand on the skills you already have by attaining more in-depth knowledge of the subjects.

-Network with classmates and build business partners for the future. Collaborate and learn together, and then enter the business field with new contacts and networks.

Higher education leads to a great future in business. Not only does it prepare you for the business world ahead, to climb to success, but it allows you to join other professionals and develop relationships with some of the best business people. Get educated from the best, meet some of the best in the field, and find your future in the business world with the skills you develop in school.

Genetically Engineered Cows Make 'Hypoallergenic' Milk

Milk was a ?bad choice? for Justin Bieber, who blamed it for making him vomit onstage Saturday night in Arizona, but it?s an even worse choice for the 1.3 million children with milk allergies.

New Zealand researchers say they?ve discovered a way to genetically engineer cows to produce ?hypoallergenic milk,? but others say it?s too good to be true.

Researchers at the University of Waikato interfered with cows? RNA (the acid that passes DNA?s genetic instructions to proteins) to select for genes that would decrease the cow?s output of BLG, a protein not present in human milk, to which 2 to 3 percent of humans are allergic, according to the study.

Immediate symptoms of milk allergies can include hives, wheezing and vomiting, according to the Mayo Clinic. Symptoms that take longer to develop may include diarrhea, abdominal cramps, a skin rash around the mouth and a runny nose.

But the ?hypoallergenic milk? eliminates one allergen only to increase another, researchers not involved with the study say.

The RNA ?fine-tuning? resulted in a 98 percent BLG ?gene knockdown,? but it didn?t decrease the milk?s overall protein content, according to the study. As the BLG protein levels dropped, casein proteins ? which are naturally found in cows? milk anyway ? increased.

Dr. Scott Sicherer, a professor and researcher at the Jaffe Food Allergy Institute at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York, said BLG is just one of the proteins in bovine milk that cause allergies in humans. ?In fact, many humans are allergic to multiple milk proteins, especially casein.

?Casein, actually, is the major milk protein that we believe causes most of the severe milk allergies,? he said. ?Creating a milk enriched with casein proteins would seem problematic given what we know about milk allergy.?

According to Sicherer, 13 to 76 percent of patients react to BLG, compared with 92 percent to 100 percent of patients who react to caseins.

The University of Waikato researchers were unavailable for comment.

Tips for a healthy skin | What is How to

Some women are just blessed with nice glowing skin, but what about all the others that have to work hard and take special care to have their skin look healthy. You don?t really have to wait for your skin to start showing sun damage or wrinkles to begin taking proper care of it. In fact, the earlier you start doing it the better it is. There are many smart moms that teach their daughters the skin care routines they themselves follow, from a very young age. This ensures that the daughters make the routine part of their daily rituals and inculcate the habit of taking care of their skin. If your mom hasn?t passed down any skincare secrets, and you find yourself wondering what to do or even considering a particular skin treatment, here are a few simple tips you can follow to make all the difference to your skin and also the way you feel.

You will find this first tip in almost every article about healthy skin, so start following this skincare routine today. There are four steps to this. Cleansing, exfoliating, toning, and moisturizing. No matter what type of skin you have doing these things is a must. Also, ensure that the products you use are hypo-allergic, not expired, and are of good quality.

Exercise and proper diet can help you look young and vibrant for years, so watch what you eat and make sure you get at least three hours of cardiovascular exercise every week. Eating salads and foods that are high in protein, fiber and vitamins is always better than anything on the menu that is fried or processed. Avoid junk food completely. And make sure your body is always well-hydrated with water or natural fruit juices.

Most of us lead busy lives. The minute we get up and have a shower, our face is slathered with a ton of makeup, which is kept on and even retouched several times until we reach home in the evening or night. If the day has been especially stressful or bad, the makeup stays on all night even. Well, this has to change. You must let your skin breathe and stay clean as much as possible. This translates into avoiding makeup for as long as possible. Using products that let the skin breathe and taking the makeup off as soon as you step into your front door.

People who pick at their skin or constantly touch their face tend to have worse skin than those who don?t. There is a lesson here. Do not touch your face unless absolutely necessary. This will prevent germs and dirt from your hands to not get on your face. Also avoid having your hand on your face while sleeping. You may also keep your skin dirt-free by changing your pillow covers and bed sheets from time to time.

Dandruff can be a major cause in having skin problems. Thus, it is imperative that you get the proper skin treatment or medication for it in case you cannot do anything about the scalp condition. In many cases, simply switching to a anti-dandruff shampoo and conditioner is enough.

Getting your 8 hours is most essential for healthy and beautiful skin. Stress-free sleep that is relaxing and rejuvenating can do wonders for your skin and overall health. To get proper sleep you must make sure that your bedroom is pitch dark and there is no sound. If your neighborhood is noisy and the blinds still let street lights in, get a pair of earmuffs or earplugs and go out shopping for thicker blinds.

Skin aging can happen due to sun damage and that?s why it is important to do whatever you can to protect it. Make using a sunscreen lotion a habit. Also use sunglasses or a sun umbrella to protect your body and eyes from the harmful rays.

Writing has always been a habit for Joe, who has over the years been a freelance writer for a number of websites, magazines and a local newspaper. He likes writing about real estate, diamonds, fitness, medical treatments, Skincare and insurance. His blogs are aimed to be informative and helpful. Having a family member practicing cosmetology, he also writes about various skin treatments available on the market today.
