National Burn Awareness Week, February 5-11, seeks to increase awareness about fire and burn injuries and educate the public on how to prevent them. Fire departments across the country are focusing this year on children?s increased risk of burn injuries in order to keep them protected. Annually, an estimated 465 children ages 14 and under die due to burn-related injuries or unintentional fires, with children three and under at the greatest risk, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
In addition, the most common cause of hospitalization to kids five-years-old and younger is scald burns caused by hot liquid. Hot tap water accounts for nearly one in four of all scald burns among children, and is also associated with more deaths and hospitalizations than any other hot liquid burn. To protect little ones from a dangerous burn injury, officials offer these five safety tips:
- Establish a ?kid-free zone? around the stove area and mark it on the floor with bright tape. Do not leave your child alone in the kitchen, and try not to hold them while you are cooking or carrying a hot beverage.
- Test food and drink temperatures by tasting cooked food and heated liquids to make sure they are not too hot for kids. This includes a baby?s bottle, so heat bottles with warm water instead of microwaving them.
- Reduce the chances of an injury at home by setting your hot water heater to 120 degrees, and also consider putting anti-scald devices on faucets and shower heads. Also, always check bathwater before placing your little ones in the tub.
- Prevent hazardous spills by not placing hot food or liquid near the edge of a counter or table. Keep pot and pan handles away from the front and utilize the back burners so children don?t grab onto them.
- Keep electrical cords out of reach, particularly cords connected to heating appliances, and make sure cords cannot be pulled into a bathtub or sink.
Burn injuries are preventable a majority of the time, so families should follow these at-home safety tips to prevent young ones in the house from suffering a painful burn injury. Negligence, however, is a factor in many burn accidents, and when a person is careless, dangerous injuries may occur as a result. If your child has suffered a burn injury that was caused by the negligence of another party, the Omaha burn injury attorneys of Cullan & Cullan, LLC can help you obtain compensation for your child?s injuries.
