Oh, boy! Here we go watching the Weather Channel off and on all day. Tropical Storm Isaac, about to be Hurricane Isaac, churns slowly toward Florida. I sure hope that you are not starting from scratch in thinking about what you need to have on hand and the things that need doing.
I?ve been out topping off my emergency supplies. Is it too early to know if the storm will come here? Yes. But, is it too early to prepare for an emergency? No.
There isn?t one thing that I?ve done yesterday or today that I shouldn?t have been doing anyway. There is nothing I?ve done that will go to waste in the event of a lack of a storm.
Gas in car. Check.
Banking done. Check.
Full propane tank for grill. Check. (needed that anyway!)
Extra sterno and batteries. Check.
Got a few extra gallons of water plus made sure what I had wasn?t expired. Tossed in some additional pantry items that I will use anyway including: granola bars, tuna, canned soup, bread, apples, instant oatmeal, beverages and so on. Checked to make sure I could find my flashlights and portable radio. I still need to buy pet food and some meds for the pet.
I?ve?own a portable file box that we can take with us in event of an emergency. I just took 30 minutes to make sure it was updated with the most recent copy of insurance policy, banking info, medical records and so forth. It didn?t take long because it is already stocked so I am just updating. In the front of the box is a list I?ve made reminding me of the things that should leave the house with me.
Finally, I grabbed the camera and took a few shots of some new things. I?ve got a photo inventory on my computer of things we own but had not updated it in a while.
Speaking of computers. Sure you can grab yours and take it with you but it doesn?t mean you don?t need a backup of some kind. Mine is backed up to satellite so I?ll be able to access files and that photo inventory from anywhere.
Don?t you need to do all of the above anyway, storm path or not?
If you are starting from scratch in getting your home or family ready for an emergency, you can turn to the National Weather Service?and also, for latest hurricane info and how-to info,?to our local paper here in Pensacola, The Pensacola News Journal.
